What is the origin of geisha balls?
Geisha balls have been used for hundreds of years, especially in Southeast Asia where jade, metal and ivory balls were found in 500 AD. Their exact origin is unknown but traces of them can be found in Taoism, one of the three pillars of Chinese thought.
Geishas were the first to use balls for their perineum.
Why use the balls of
geisha?
These sex toys are actually practical when it comes to female pleasure, but their primary function nevertheless remains the positive impact produced in terms of retoning the perineum and its musculature. It is an almost indispensable tool for practicing pelvic exercises and perineal rehabilitation, especially after childbirth.
It is important to know that the pelvic floor muscles perform 3 main functions, summarized in the acronym SSS :
- Organ support
- Sphincter functions
- Sexuality and sensations.
Wearing Geisha balls is beneficial for these 3 functions.
The pelvic floor is made up of bundles of muscles, tissues and ligaments that intersect on several levels. This network of muscle fibers covers the region from the pubis to the coccyx and overlaps in 3 levels.
- On the surface, we find the cutaneous plane which includes the muscles around the vulva, the vagina, the clitoris and the external sphincter of the anus.
- The median plane provides control over the external urethral sphincter and the muscular walls of the vagina, among others.
- The deep layer consists of two types of muscles: the coccygeus muscle and the levator ani muscle. Together, they make up what is called the pelvic diaphragm; the buffer zone that supports the weight of the organs in the pelvic cavity: the bladder, urethra, uterus, vagina, ovaries and fallopian tubes, rectum, and a portion of the colon.
Doing perineum exercises with geisha balls therefore has multiple benefits, the main ones being related to health as well as sex life. They are particularly effective for women and people with vulvas who wish to tone their perineum before, during or after pregnancy.

How to use your geisha balls properly?
First, how to insert geisha balls? It is important to adopt the correct position so that inserting them is easy and pleasant. Sit comfortably lying on your back with your legs raised or in a squatting position.
Once properly installed, simply insert the balls at the entrance of the vagina, not too deep otherwise the muscle work will not work properly. The withdrawal string must remain outside the vagina and oriented towards the tendon center of the perineum. It is possible to orient the string towards the pubis but the silicone that composes it can cling to your hair when removing the balls and be unpleasant.
At first, inserting geisha balls can be difficult especially for those who have difficulty with penetration but a little lubricant should make the insertion easier. It is imperative to use a water based lubricant compatible with silicone geisha balls.
Now that the geisha balls are well installed, either you decide to practice Kegel exercises which will allow you to strengthen the perineal muscles more quickly thanks to the voluntary and conscious contraction of these muscles. Or, you can go about your business as if nothing had happened.
What is important is to make as many movements as possible to feel the movement of the balls inside the geisha balls. This “technique” allows you to strengthen your perineum without paying attention to it and without too much effort thanks to reflex contractions of the muscles.
Be careful not to wear them for too long, otherwise the pelvic floor muscles may become tired because they are not designed to contract over very long intervals and for long minutes.
Like all other muscles, the pelvic floor muscles need recovery. It is therefore recommended to use them for 15 to 20 minutes and ideally 1 day out of 2, to allow for rest phases.
The use of balls is not fixed in time, you can very well wear them for 3 months, estimate that you no longer need them and later, at the slightest sign of weakness, start wearing them again. Pelvic floor rehabilitation is a long-term training!
Once your session is over, you can relax and choose a comfortable position (preferably squatting) to extract the geisha balls from your vaginal canal. To do this, the string is a guide that shows the way to the base of the ball. Once the ball is reached, you must grab it with your fingers and pull it while exhaling.
Finally, after each use, it is essential to clean them with warm water and soap. If you tend to get fungal infections, it is a good idea to use a suitable product so as not to recontaminate them with mushrooms each time they are used.
Also, once cleaned, do not wipe the balls with textile fibers. Use a microfiber cloth that you reserve exclusively for this purpose.
A toned perineum: what could be better?
What is the connection between the Kegel balls and sexual pleasure?
Geisha balls are inserted at the entrance of the vagina and their weight rests at the vestibular level. Under the effect of gravity and thanks to reflex movements, the perineum is permanently contracted so that they are maintained in the vaginal cavity. This reflex contraction of the pelvic floor muscles allows the different levels of the pelvic floor to be solicited.
It is also possible to increase muscular effort by performing contractions of the perineal muscles in a “conscious” way. In fact, performing a series of contractions and releases, called Kegel exercises, while wearing Geisha balls, can considerably increase muscular effort and improve the tone of the pelvic floor.
But what is happening at the anatomical level for such effects to be observed on sexual functions? To learn about the benefits of these sex toys on your body and your sexual pleasure, consult our blog post .

How to Choose the Right Geisha Balls for Your Needs?
Who Should Use Kegel Balls?
It is important to remember that a hypotonic perineum (which is not toned enough) does not only affect people in a postpartum situation. It also affects menopausal people - who experience muscle relaxation linked to the drop in estrogen - or people who practice activities such as running, sports that involve jumping, poor practice of abdominal exercises such as crunches, etc.
It is important to know that men and people with penises can also have pelvic floor problems. However, the latter is more fragile in women and people with vulvas since their anatomy is different.
Indeed, the pelvic bones are more open and spread apart, so the role of the perineum to support all the organs that weigh on it is more important, especially since women have an additional organ: the uterus. This is why it is essential to strengthen it!
If you suffer from urinary leakage, geisha balls will be useful to you because they have a significant impact on urinary continence.
How to choose your pair or kit of geisha balls?
You can choose a single pair of geisha balls, but the best solution is to opt for scalable kits. These kits are composed of several balls that differ in volume and weight. The advantage of this scalability is to contribute to a deeper strengthening of the perineal muscles.
By reducing the volume of the balls, the strengthening work engages more muscles and especially the deep muscles which are more complicated to mobilize during a simple contraction exercise (Kegel type). The combination of weight and volume is therefore interesting to further promote proprioceptive work (which calls on the body's muscle memory).
Now that you have a kit, start by using the largest and lightest balls. These are easier to keep in the vagina because the muscle contraction to successfully hold them inside the vaginal cavity is less.
Once you have practiced and feel ready, start using the medium sized balls and so on. As explained above, the smaller and heavier the balls, the more you will engage your pelvic floor muscles and the more toned they will be!
To know when to move on to another ball, simply squat down and simulate a cough while holding - with your muscles - the ball that is located in the vagina. If it falls out, it means that your superficial and intermediate muscles are not yet strong enough and you still have to carry it. If the ball does not fall out, your muscles are toned enough to move on to the next one.
If, however, you want to start with a single geisha ball, choose a ball of medium volume and weight. The work will be just as beneficial as with an evolving kit but the perineal rehabilitation will take longer.
But it is important to know that these sex toys are to be used in addition to perineal rehabilitation with a physiotherapist. Do not start alone and get help from a health professional.
Can you use Geisha balls for anal penetration?
Many people confuse geisha balls with anal beads, but geisha balls are never used for anal use because they do not have any safety features that prevent the ball from being absorbed by the rectum.
